FINALLY! A train connects Northern and Southern Bulgaria!
From 12.02.2014 BDZ restores the direct fast train from Gorna Oryahovitsa to Plovdiv via Veliko Tarnovo. It also connects Dryanovo, Tryavna, Kazanlak, Karlovo and Banya, with convenient connections to and from Gabrovo and Hisar.
The two trains were canceled in the summer of 2023. After the repair work at the Plovdiv railway junction forced the suspension of train traffic between Plovdiv and Filipovo station. Since the deadline for launching the section has been postponed several times and there is still no traffic on it, trains No. 4631 and No. 4632 will run to and from Filipovo station, located in the northern part of Plovdiv.
The scedule:
In the morning, fast train No. 4631 will depart from the station in Gorna Oryahovitsa at 07:05 a.m. At Tsareva Livada station it will make a fast and convenient connection to and from Gabrovo. It will pass through Kazanlak at 09:36 a.m., through Karlovo at 10:42 a.m. And will arrive at Plovdiv’s Filipovo station at 11:40. From where a bus will be provided for travelers to the city’s central station. Conversely, the bus from Plovdiv to Filipovo will leave at 3:30 p.m., and the train at 4:10 p.m. And will arrive in Gorna Oryahovitsa at 8:53 p.m. There will also be a connection to and from Tsareva livada station Gabrovo.
There will also be convenient connections to non-regional cities and resort centers
In addition to the direct connection between the regions of Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, Stara Zagora and Plovdiv, as well as the second largest non-regional city of Kazanlak, trains No. 4631 and 4632 connect Gabrovo and Hisar, stop in the resort town of Pavel Banya, and in Plovdiv have connections to and from Pazardzhik and other destinations.
After the launch of the Plovdiv – Filipovo section, trains will run from and to Plovdiv station. Until then, bus transportation is provided between Filipovo and the central station in the city under the hills.
With the restoration of the two trains, a convenient transport alternative is provided between Central Northern and Southern Bulgaria. So we finally have a convinient Veliko Tarnovo transport to Plovdiv.

The journey from Veliko Tarnovo to Varna by train is 186.4 km and takes 5 h 20 min. There are 10 connections per day, with the first departure at 08:48 and the last one at 22:10. It is possible to travel from Veliko Tarnovo to Varna by train for only BGN 6.71 or BGN 13.70. The best price for this trip is BGN 6.71.
