Veliko Tarnovo celebrates its holiday on March 22 with a procession, concerts and a large-scale exhibition

After a two-year break due to the pandemic, Veliko Tarnovo will celebrate its holiday – March 22. The Day of the Old Capital marks the memorable victory of Tsar Ivan Asen II in the battle of Klokotnitsa and the subsequent rise of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The colorful festive program includes ceremonial rituals, a big city procession, concerts, a solemn session, opening of a large exhibition, as well as a screening of the audio-visual show “Tsarevgrad Tarnov – sound and light”, combined with spectacular fireworks.

Traditionally, the celebration of March 22 begins at dawn – at 7:30 is the beginning of the Holy Liturgy in the church “Holy Forty Martyrs”. At 9:00 in the courtyard of the church will be laid flowers at the tomb of Tsar Kaloyan, a water consecration will be performed, a blessing will be served. At 9:45 am is the beginning of the festive citywide procession, dedicated to the benefactors of Veliko Tarnovo – it will start from the church “Holy Forty Martyrs” and will continue to the building of the Municipality.

At 10:30 there will be a ritual for raising the flag of the old capital city, and the Mayor – Daniel Panov will deliver his holiday speech. Immediately after that, Metropolitan Gregory of Veliko Tarnovo will do the holiday blessing.

The solemn session of the Veliko Tarnovo Municipal Council will be held at 11:00 in the building of the Music and Drama Theater “Konstantin Kisimov”

The big exhibition “Return to Veliko Tarnovo” will be opened at 12:00 in the renovated Boris Denev Art Gallery.

The first concert program starts at 11:00 am in front of the Municipality building with the performances of the Professional Folklore Ensemble “Iskra” . At 12:00 the talents from “Junior Band” at “Emilian Stanev” Secondary school will appear on the stage, and at 13:00 – the pop singer – Dara.

The big festive concert “We, the Bulgarians” of the Ensemble “Chinari” starts at 18:30 in the Palace of Culture and Sports “Vasil Levski”.

The finale of the program is the screening of the audio-visual show “Tsarevgrad Tarnov sound and light”, combined with attractive fireworks. It starts at 20:30.

For the convenience of the visitors of the concert in the Sports Hall, as well as for all those wishing to watch the performance of Tsarevets, the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo provides free buses. Their starting stop will be on Krakow Street – in front of the Vasil Levski Sports Complex. The buses will depart after the end of the performances of “Chinari” and will travel to the square “Tsar Asen I”.
