The route of Hemus Highway through the Veliko Tarnovo district has been approved

The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works has given the green light to the project for construction of the route of the Hemus Highway which will pass through the region.

The Hemus Highway is a project of state and public interest and its implementation aims to accelerate the process of economic and social cohesion at the regional level. It is of strategic importance for the whole of Northern Bulgaria. As a road artery, the highway will play a major role in integrating the national transport infrastructure into the European transport system. This makes the implementation of the project not only a national but also a European priority.

According to the project, the route of Hemus Highway will pass through 11 settlements on the territory of the Veliko Tarnovo region. The highway will pass through lands in Pavlikeni, Patresh, Daskot and Paskalevets in Pavlikeni municipality, as well as in Dichin, Resen and Nikyup in Veliko Tarnovo municipality, Stefan Stambolovo, Polski Senovets and Kutsina in Polski Trambesh municipality and Polikraishte in Gorna Oryahovitsa municipality.

The route of Hemus Highway is part of the European road network from the connection with Corridor IV to the west to Corridor IX near Veliko Tarnovo. It is planned to connect the eastern and western parts of Bulgaria with the Trans-European Network. Hemus Highway will connect Sofia with Varna and will duplicate the first-class roads E70 from Varna to Shumen, E772 from Shumen to Yablanitsa and E83 from Yablanitsa to Sofia. According to preliminary estimates, the Hemus highway is expected to be completed in 2024.

Recently, Deputy Minister Nikolay Nankov publicly announced that the preparation for the construction of the route to Veliko Tarnovo has begun, engineering roads are being built and the humus layer of the properties that will be affected is being removed.
