Sports, Things to do

The seventh edition of Tarnovo Ultra will be held on April 9th and 10th

The start will be given at 11.00 on April 9 at the monument “Assenevtsi”. The competition will take place in 6 disciplines – three in running – 13, 33 and 53 km, two in cycling – 30 and 48 km and duathlon – 33 running and 48 km cycling. On April 9 there will be a company event with a 3 km run with four people in a team. Nearly 1,000 competitors are expected to attend. Starting in the city center of the old capital of Bulgaria – this is the only MTB and Trail running race, that finishes in the city center of a regional capital in Bulgaria. The routes include incredibly beautiful tracks and amazing views, on the way passing through two medieval fortresses!

Organizer of “Tarnovo Ultra 2022” is the local sports orienteering club “Brown Team”, a member of the Bulgarian Orienteering Federation. Since its establishment it has always been in top 3 of the club classification, performing equally well in foot orienteering, MTB-orienteering and Ski-orienteering. That’s why all the income from Tarnovo Ultra goes directly for the development of their team and for new training maps for sports orienteering.

They came up with the idea of Tarnovo Ultra in late 2015 and it was already present in 2016 – with distances of 43km Trail Running and 43km MTB.

In 2016 there were a hundred competitors in Tarnovo Ultra, who started in the sun, but ended in a torrent. Then there were 300 racers, who endured dehydration at the scorching Tarnovo Ultra 2017 and 400 at the even hotter Tarnovo Ultra 2018. Then came Tarnovo Ultra 2019, marked by heavy rain, puddles and rivers of mud with more than 450 competitors. In the pandemic 2020, the event was moved to the summer, because of sports event ban in the spring and therefore it became one of the biggest events of the year with more than 600 competitors. 2021 exceeded even the bravest expectations as there were over 200 bikers and over 650 runners at the starting line.

And now, for the seventh edition, after the event came close to 900 competitors in 2021 and way too big for the city center, it is going back to the place of the first Tarnovo Ultra – the magnificent Asenevtsi Monument – overlooking the whole historical part of the old capital, just minutes away from the city center.
