After a two-year break due to the pandemic, Veliko Tarnovo will celebrate its holiday – March 22. The Day of the Old Capital marks the memorable victory of Tsar Ivan Asen II in the battle of Klokotnitsa and the subsequent rise of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The colorful festive program includes ceremonial rituals, a big city procession, concerts, a solemn session, opening of a large exhibition, as well as a screening of the audio-visual show “Tsarevgrad Tarnov – sound and light”, combined with spectacular fireworks.

A donation campaign in Veliko Tarnovo for those in need in Ukraine

The residents of Veliko Tarnovo region can make a donation of essential goods for the people in need in Ukraine. Clothes, shoes, blankets, food and sanitary materials are collected at the Bulgarian Red Cross checkpoint in the old capital.

People of all ages are involved in the campaign of the Bulgarian Red Cross and the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo to raise material aid for the people of Ukraine. The donation point, located at 14 Marno Pole Street, is open every weekday from 9:00 to 11:00 and from 14:00 to 16:00 and is staffed by two volunteers from the organization. Dozens of packs of baby diapers, bedding, hygiene items, etc. have been collected over the past week.

Easing of the anti-epidemic measures in Bulgaria

The Ministry of Health has announced that as of Thursday, February 24, the gradual easing of anti-epidemic measures in Bulgaria will begin.

The report of the Chief State Health Inspector proposed a three-step approach to alleviate anti-epidemic measures, according to which the requirement for a “green certificate” across the country should be abolished as of March 20, with a favorable trend in the epidemic situation.

A campaign for hazardous waste collection will be held in Veliko Tarnovo at the end of the month

A new campaign for the collection of hazardous waste from households will be held in Veliko Tarnovo. A mobile station will be located on February 24 and 25 in the big districts of Buzludzha and Kolyu Ficheto. In each of the two days, its working hours will be from 10.00 to 16.00. In the Buzludzha district, the checkpoint will be located in the parking lot in front of the neighborhood market on February 25, and on the next day it will be located in the Kolyu Ficheto district – in the parking lot on Simeon Veliki Street – opposite Mall Veliko Tarnovo.

Anyone can dispose of the following types of waste: expired medicines, contaminated packaging, mercury thermometers, fluorescent tubes, cleaning agents, disinfectants, chemicals, pesticides, oils and adhesives, obsolete electrical and electronic equipment; use of batteries and accumulators; obsolete tires. Organizers of this campaign are the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo and Balbok Engineering AD. The campaign is the first in a series of actions for the collection of hazardous household waste, planned in 2022.

A famous American traveler is shooting videos for Veliko Tarnovo

The 56-year-old traveler Forest Mallard has started shooting 19 videos that will promote Veliko Tarnovo around the world. The first five are already available and are dedicated to the Stambolov Bridge, the House with the monkey, the Monument “Assenevtsi”, Mother Bulgaria War Memorial and the Monument of Vasil Levski.

Forest Mallard will stay in Veliko Tarnovo for a month and will be immersed in the history of the city. Videos about a number of other historical landmarks in the old capital are to be shot. Tsarevets, the monument “Velchova Zavera”, the performance “Sound and Light”, the Archaeological Museum, the Patriarchate, the Sarafkin House and many others will be presented.

Forest first came to Veliko Tarnovo in 2016 and immediately fell in love with the city. The landscape, the architecture, the monuments, the medieval ruins and the vast history were unexpected and fascinating. It seems that the whole tourist marketing for Bulgaria directed him to Plovdiv and Sofia, but as a person who loves history, Forest was struck by the fortresses of Veliko Tarnovo and Kardzhali and the natural wonders of Belogradchik.
