Repair of Gorna Oryahovitsa airport near Veliko Tarnovo begins in September

The repair of the Gorna Oryahovitsa airport near Veliko Tarnovo is expected to begin in September. The renovation of the smallest international airport in Bulgaria was due to start in the summer, but because of the elaboration of a detailed DDP, the many co-owners of the parcels in the area and the expropriation procedures, the repair was delayed, explained the administration.

According to the mayor of Gorna Oryahovitsa Dobromir Dobrev, the development plans are ready. The mayor also says they are expecting the concessionaire to enter their investment project in the municipality to issue the building permits next month. He also pointed out that this will be the biggest investor in the municipality for the last years. According to the concession contract, which was signed in 2016, the planned investments amount to BGN 32 million, of which over BGN 20 million should be invested in the first 4 years.

The air transport agreement became a reality two years ago when the Council of Ministers gave the concession to the consortium “G. Oryahovitsa Civil Airport” consortium. This consortium is comprised of the company “Kristalna Voda” JSC, which owns 95% of the capital of the company, and “G. Oryahovitsa” EAD, whose sole owner is the transport ministry with a capital of 5%. The concession is for 35 years.

One of the first tasks for the investors in the Gorna Oryahovitsa airport is the extension and expansion of the runway, which is currently 2450 m in length so it will be able to accommodate larger aircraft. According to the concession contract, the investor has to develop, expand and modernize the airport, and the repair activities will be divided into three stages. They provide for the construction of an additional taxiway, a cargo terminal and a distribution center, as well as an aircraft repair base, a logistics center and a pilot training center. There is also a refurbishment of the terminal building. This airport near Veliko Tarnovo is expected to have a great economic contribution to the area.
