Antique festival “Nike – the game and the victory” near Veliko Tarnovo

The festival is traditionally held in the Nicopolis ad Istrum Archaeological Reserve near Veliko Tarnovo. It is the only one of its kind, dedicated to the late Antiquity, and has been held on the territory of Veliko Tarnovo for three consecutive years. This year the festival will be on July 13, Saturday at 10.00 am.

Festival fans will once again be able to taste the Roman cuisine, witness an antique trial, see demonstrations of Gothic and Roman equipment, antique fashion, Roman theatre, religious discourse, Gothic chief funeral, a concert under the stars and more. You will find the program for the festival below.

Program:
10:00 – Presentation of the groups; Crafts market; Demonstrations of antique cuisine; “The Covenant of Wulfil – the Barbarian Cross”
11:00 – Fertility Rite
12:30 – Late Antique: Wedding Ritual, Cuisine and Gladiator Fighting
14:00 – 17:00 – Demonstrations
17:00 – Church disputes
18:00 – Late Antique Battle
19:30 – Funeral of a Gothic chieftain
20:00 – Concert of “Xana” and “Freya”

The main purpose of the organizers of the festival is to promote the unique Archaeological Reserve Nicopolis ad Istrum and to demonstrate to the guests a little-known period of history in an attractive and educational way. Games with the audience are planned as well as fun activities for children. Visitors can wear their own antique costumes. The best costume will be rewarded.

The archaeological reserve Nikopolis ad Istrum is now officially included in the national movement “Know Bulgaria. 100 National Sights “ so all visitors of the tourist attraction can get a stamp in their booklets of the 100 national Bulgarian sights. Now Veliko Turnovo has four sights included in the booklet – Tsarevets, Arbanassi, the Archaeological Museum and Nicopolis ad Istrum. The festival itself is part of the cultural calendar of the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo for 2019 and since its first edition has been very popular.
