The second edition of the Walnut Festival is part of the festivals in Veliko Tarnovo program
This exciting event will be held in the town square and will feature two main sections: culinary and folklore. The Walnut Festival is created by Petya Kirilova and Antonio Perez, whose vision is to expand it internationally. They aim to collaborate with Spanish municipalities from the Malaga region, which also celebrates a similar festival. Their goal is to make this a large-scale event. To draw visitors from across the country, including from Veliko Tarnovo and the surrounding areas. They hope guests will spend at least one full weekend in Dolna Oryahovitsa. And will enjoy the Walnut Festival and explore nearby Veliko Tarnovo.
Denitsa Alexandrova-Ivanova designed the original festival poster in 2019 when the idea for the event emerged.Petya and Antonio returned from Spain that year and settled in Petya’s hometown.
Why name it the Walnut Festival?
The town’s name, Oryahovitsa, means “walnut trees,” which were once central to the region’s livelihood. Petya’s family has a personal connection to walnuts. Her grandfather owned confectioneries and made a special green walnut liqueur from an old family recipe. This inspired Petya to create a festival that would celebrate this local treasure.
This year, the event is supported by key local figures like Yordanka Tihcheva from “Hristo Kozlev 1883” HC, the Gorna Oryahovitsa Municipality. Аnd the local City Hall, represented by Grigor Minkov and Yordan Baichev. Petar Georgiev, the curator of the Ethnographic Museum, is also in charge of organizing the event.
Culinary competition
The festival’s culinary competition will showcase dishes where walnuts are a mandatory ingredient. Master chefs will compete in three categories: main courses, desserts, and drinks. Tsarina Tsaneva, the Hell’s Kitchen finalist, Ivailo Ivanov and Sevdalin Krastev will be on the jury to evaluate these creations. After judging, attendees will have the opportunity to taste the culinary delights.
Alongside the food, the festival will feature lively folklore performances from local amateurs and ensembles. Folk singer Rositsa Peycheva will also perform, ensuring a festive atmosphere throughout the event. This celebration of walnuts, culture, and cuisine promises to bring joy to both locals and visitors. Аligning with the spirit of festivals in Veliko Tarnovo.
