The team of Sofia Film Fest and Veliko Turnovo Municipality offer to the cinema lovers in Veliko Tarnovo an open-air cinema. For five days, some of the most important, powerful and moving films from 2018 will be shown in the Marno Pole Park in Veliko Tarnovo. The ticket price for a movie is 4 leva, a “ticket for two” is worth 7 leva, and if you get tickets for more than 2 movies – the price is 3 leva. All screenings have a start time of 21.00 – after sunset.
On June 17 (Monday) the festival starts with one of the newest Bulgarian titles “Irina” – a feature-length debut of the director Nadezhda Koseva. Irina lives in a small mining town and works in a roadside pub. Her husband was mutilated in an accident, and she was fired from work, on the same day. To save her family, Irina decides to become a surrogate mother – to give the child to strangers for money. Gradually she will discover what it means to love and forgive … Expect a special guest – the main actress in the movie Martina Apostolova, she will present the movie to the audience in Veliko Tarnovo.
At the second festival evening, June 18 (Tuesday), the winner of the “Golden Palma” from Cannes’18 – “Shoplifters” will be presented, its director is Hirokazu Koreeda. Osamu and his son find a little girl in the cold in a shop. Initially, Osamu’s wife refused to host the girl, but she agreed to take care of the little one after she understood the difficulties she faced daily. Although the family is poor and barely earns money for food through petty theft, it is happy together until an unexpected incident reveals secrets that will put the family ties on trial …
“Dovlatov ” is the new film by Aleksey German Jr., premiered at Berlinale last year. Aleksey German Jr. turned the camera to his home town, Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), to present the life of the young Soviet writers at that time. “Dovlatov” tells the story about six days of the life of the brilliant, ironic writer Sergey Dovlatov, who looks far beyond the narrow borders of Soviet Russia in the 1970s. Together with his friend, poet Joseph Brodsky, he struggles to keep his own talent and integrity as he watches their friends entertain the unscrupulous state machine. They will escape the oppressive regime by emigrating to New York, losing everything they have at home. “Dovlatov” promises a wonderful and challenging motion picture evening on Wednesday, June 19th.
For the audience of Veliko Tarnovo, the latest work of the Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan will be presented – “Wild Pear”, in which Bulgaria is one of the co-producers. Its premiere was in the Cannes 2018 competition program. The film tells the story of young Sinan, passionately in love with literature, whose dream is to become a writer. After returning to his home town of Anatolia, he tried to find the means to publish his book, but he faced various problems, including his father’s debts … Fate often plays with people and likes to surprise … The screening of the film is scheduled for June 20th ( Thursday ).
Alice Rohrwacher’s new film – “Happy Lazaro” was awarded the Best Screenplay award from Cannes 2018 and other awards worldwide, and his author was invited to the jury of the main competition at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival in 2019. “Happy Lazaro ” is a story about the meeting between a young good-natured villager and Tancredi, a young nobleman with insane imagination. When Tancredi asks Lazaro for help in organizing his own kidnapping, a strong relationship is established between them. Alice Rohrwacher’s movie can be seen in Veliko Tarnovo on June 21 (Friday).
