The holiday itself:
Todorovden, also called Todoritsa and Horse Easter. It’s a church holiday celebrated on the Saturday of the first week of Great Lent.
On this day, as well as on February 17, the Church commemorates St. Theodore Tyrone. People have attested to the veneration of St. Theodore as far back as the early centuries. Theodore Tyrone is often confused with Theodore Stratilatus, who lived around the same time (early 4th century) and held a higher military position than him, despite being another warrior saint and martyr.
People in Bulgaria celebrate Todorovden with the names Todor, Todorka, Teodora, Teia, and Thea. According to NSI data from 2017, with a total population of 130,233 celebrating this name day.
It is also called Horse Easter, because of the solemn honoring of the horse on that day and horse races – kushii – held on it.
