The ninth edition of the National Festival of Sheep Breeders will be held from 8th to 10th May 2020 near the Petropavlovski Monastery in Lyaskovets near Veliko Tarnovo.
The event will traditionally combine sheep and goat breeding with the rich Bulgarian culture, traditions and folklore. The largest livestock forum in Bulgaria will bring together industry professionals from all over the country, fans of folklore, lovers of old culinary traditions and healthy farm foods. During the three days of the festival, there will be exhibitions of purebred sheep and goats, agricultural machinery, equipment, specialized medicine and literature. Different breeds of dogs and horses will be shown as well and there will be a lot of interesting demonstrations. There will be a lot of competitions, for example, milking and shearing sheep competitions, heaviest ram, goat milking, horse hauling and more.
The largest exhibition of dairy and meat food products will be held near the Petropavlovski monastery. It will be under the motto “Bulgarian food from Bulgarian raw materials” and its main purpose is to revive the old culinary tastes, to promote the consumption of sheep and goat products and their production from Bulgarian materials.
The ninth edition of the National Festival of Sheep Breeders will feature a farmers’ market, culinary zones, traditional crafts, folk festivals, fire walkers (nestinari), folklore dances and more. A special surprise will be the many entertainments and ethno attractions for the whole family, which the organizers have prepared – from open lessons in playing the bagpipe and pipe, folk dances to different games and more.
For the first time, the museum exhibitions dedicated to sheep breeding will be interactive and will revive the livelihood of the old Bulgarian shepherds, as well as their traditions and customs. You will be able to see how the farmland and crafts in Bulgaria looked like more than 100 years ago in the re-enactment “Chiflik”. Fans of folklore will be able to enjoy folklore from all over Bulgaria during this years’ edition of the National Folklore Competition. For those keen on folk dances, there will be a large “St. George’s Dance” which will include formations from the country studying Bulgarian folk dances known as hora. The youngest visitors of the festival are not forgotten, there will be various workshops and a draw me a sheep open-air drawing class for the little ones.
