According to “Borba” newspaper, there will be a four-lane extension of the road junction to Momin Sbor. There are four lanes at the moment, but only near Veliko Tarnovo itself and the lanes should be wide and feature a high-speed road all the way to Momin Sbor. The extension is already approved. The current road will reach a large road junction, which will be located in the area of the former Serb Grill southeast of Momin Sbor, where the future highway will pass, according to sketches from its final project.
The major approaches and access from the regional centre to the new Ruse – Veliko Tarnovo highway are also defined. By the end of the year, the alienation procedures will start for the route, which will be built in parallel with the Hemus highway section to the old capital, scheduled for completion in two years. The current main road to Sofia will be the main road link to the Ruse – Veliko Tarnovo highway.
The design speed of the new highway is 120 km/h. According to the Cost-Benefit analysis for this project, cars will pass the entire route in just over an hour, or 25 minutes faster than now. However, the construction is yet to start and the contract is expected to be announced by the end of the year. According to the analysis by experts, just the annual fuel savings for travellers will be over 8 million litres. This is mainly due to the shorter route and convenient access to it with approaches from larger settlements. The reduced travel time, tire wear, vehicle depreciation will also reduce transport costs.
