On 17th October 17 (Saturday) the village of Strelets will host the second edition of the Sweet Sorghum Feast. The festival is organized by the village mayoralty and the local community centre and pensioner club.
The organizers aim to trace back, preserve and popularize folklore traditions and customs in Gorna Oryahovitsa region and to revive the tradition of treacle (madzhun in Bulgarian) producing in the village. Sweet sorghum is any of the many varieties of the sorghum grass whose stalks have high sugar content and is used for syrup production (treacle).
There will be also a contest for the tastiest treacle; only residents of Strelets can take part in it. A jury will pronounce the best treacle and the winning contestants will receive diplomas.
There will also be a concert programme with lots of singing and dancing. Sweet Sorghum celebrations begin at 10 am in the village centre.
