The Tsarevets fortress in Veliko Tarnovo will become a natural decor for the 5th International Festival “Medieval Tarnovgrad”. From 28th to 30th June, the arts, crafts, military skills of Bulgaria, Byzantium and Europe of the XII-XIV century will come to life on the historic hill. Over 140 participants from Bulgaria, Italy, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine will take part in the spectacular re-enactments.
The largest mediaeval festival in Bulgaria is organized by the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo, the Regional Museum of History and the National Tradition Company – Veliko Tarnovo Branch. This year’s focus of the festival is the taste and cuisine of the Middle Ages. The participants will prepare dishes on-site from the era of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, Byzantium, England, Russia, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean. Visitors will take part in special tastings and will be able to experience the taste of mead, beer, monastery and military food from the XII-XIV century.
The life of the medieval city and various crafts will be shown in the days of the Tsarevets festival – from hot and cold forging, leather processing, parchment and paper making, mintage, carving, cutlery, pottery and ceramics, to different weaving methods and more. Visitors will be able to engage in bow and crossbow shooting and have fun with medieval games, music and dances. For the first time, there will be a “Bolyarski sword” battle tournament.
The program of the festival will start on June 28 (Friday) at 19.30 with a concert and a fire show “Stars over Medieval Tarnovgrad” in the Tsarevets fortress, with the participation of the Bulgarian group “Erinei” and the Ukrainian troubadours “Spiritual Seasons”. The official opening of the Medieval Tarnovgrad International Forum 2019 is at 10.00 on 29 June (Saturday) at Tsar Asen I Square in front of the Tsarevets fortress where all Bulgarian and foreign participants will be presented.
Access to the medieval Tsarevets festival is free and only the entrance fee for the architectural and museum reserve has to be paid. The evening events on 28th and 29th June from 18:30 to 21:30 will be with a free entrance for the fortress.
