On Lazarov Day, April 27, Saturday, little lazarky from the folklore formations of the Municipal Children’s Complex will demonstrate the custom of Lazaruvane from 10 a.m. at the Samovodska charshia. The celebration continues on the Vladish bridge. From there, the little girls will throw their flower wreaths into the Yantra River, calling for health and love.
Every year on 1st of March, Bulgarian people celebrate a centuries-old tradition called the day of Baba Marta. Baba means ‘Grandma’ and Marta means ‘March’. The holiday is related to sending off the winter and welcoming the approaching spring. It is an old Bulgarian tradition, and all foreigners living in Bulgaria have wondered about it.
A rich program awaits residents and visitors of Veliko Tarnovo on September 6th – Unification Day. The Unification of Bulgaria was the act of the unification of the Bulgarian Kingdom and Eastern Rumelia in the autumn of 1885. It was coordinated by the Bulgarian Secret Central Revolutionary Committee. The unification was carried out after riots in different cities of Eastern Rumelia, followed by a military coup on September 6th in 1885, supported by the Bulgarian Prince Alexander I and led by Major Danail Nikolaev. The day was declared a public holiday for the country by the National Assembly on February 18, 1998.
A series of children’s theatre productions will please the kids in this year’s Veliko Tarnovo Holiday season. On the stage of “Vesel” will be presented the plays “The Little Match Girl” (November 25), “Christmas with Friends” (2 December), “Christmas Snowflakes” (December 9), “The Shoemaker and the Dwarves” (December 16). One of the most exciting events of the Veliko Tarnovo Holiday season will be the magic matinee for children and parents “Christmas wonders with Astor and Angel Zaberski brass band”. The show will be in December,10th in the big hall of the Veliko Turnovo Theater. On Saturday 9th and 16th of December, in the municipality’s hall, the children will be able to make Christmas souvenirs, toys and the traditional sourvakinitsi.
Veliko Tarnovo holiday season was officially opened with a rich and diverse program. The beginning of the cultural Christmas month in Veliko Tarnovo was put on 24th, November with the ceremony of lighting up the Christmas decoration in the town. The illuminations were impressive: hundreds of Christmas tree toys and more than 1,000 luminous elements were gleaming, fireworks brightened the sky and that is how the Christmas magic began. The children were entertained with a puppet show at the stage in front of the municipality, there was music, joy, plenty of glowing emotions.
