Veliko Tarnovo – a leader in the Balkans

Veliko Tarnovo is the place hosting the largest number of buildings/monuments of cultural heritage significance in the Balkans. The number of these buildings in the old capital is 1580. That was announced yesterday at the National Assembly by Veliko Tarnovo MP Evgeni Stoev during the debates on the adoption of the second reading of amendments to the Law on Cultural Heritage. The Parliament decided to create six regional centres that will have the powers of the National Institute of Immovable Cultural Heritage (NIICH). This will overcome delays as currently NIICH takes too much time to deal with issues or process a request – far beyond the statutory deadline. This caused many problems for citizens and the local authorities even at times when emergency actions had to be undertaken. This is one of the reasons Veliko Tarnovo lost several unique houses-monuments that collapsed waiting for the NIICH decisions. Veliko Tarnovo The new unit will be able to grant permission and to provide certifications for repairs or strengthening of monuments and buildings of cultural heritage significance located locally.
