Tsarevets Fortress lights up in purple on 17th November

On November, 17^th Tsrevets Fortress will shine in purple, the reason being the World Prematurity Day. Veliko Tarnovo Municipality is participating in the campaign to mark the day to show its support for the families of babies born pre-term. This day is observed each year to raise awareness of pre-term birth and the concerns of premature babies and their families worldwide

On Monday, from 7 pm Tsarevets Fortress is going to glow in purple for half an hour as a sign of Veliko Tarnovo’s and its citizens’ sympathy for the premature babies and their families and in memory of those who unfortunately lost their battle for life.

Approximately one in 10 of all babies born worldwide are premature. Bulgaria is also part of this grim statistics with premature births reaching 16-17% in some regions.

At the same time some good news came last week – apparently Veliko Tarnovo Municipality is one of 13 regions in Bulgaria with considerable rise in the birth rate. 1023 babies were born so far this year.

The most prominent hotel in Veliko Tarnovo is to be restored

The hotel is in terrible state

The oldest and most prominent hotel in Veliko Tarnovo, Tsar Boris Treti (Tsar Boris the Third), is going to be restored. The plans for its complete restoration and renovation are with the Bulgarian National Institute for Immovable Cultural Heritage now and are awaiting approval. The project is elaborated by the same architect who restored Hadji Nikoli Inn and turned into a real gem which even won the Building of the Year 2010 contest.

This is how it looked in its heyday

The owner of the masterpiece created by the Bulgarian master builder Kolyo Ficheto is owned by the Texan millionaire Edmund Beck. He bought the former hotel, which is located on Opalchenska Street, from a bailiff.

This imposing for its time building was constructed by a master builder who built another 89 houses for some of the richest citizens of Veliko Tarnovo at the end of the 19th century. In the last year of its existence it served as a youth centre and a place for evening entertainments.

10 non-working days for Christmas and New Year Celebrations

The government is expected to announce today that 2nd January is also going to be a non-working day, meaning that we’re going to have 5 consecutive non-working days for Christmas and another 5 for the New Year celebrations. So everyone will have enough time to go and visit their friends and family and also plenty of time for eating and drinking as the tradition enjoys.

2nd January 2015 is not an official public holiday but it will be included in this festive time span for a more efficient use of the festive days by merging 31st December (which was already announced a day of rest earlier this year), the official public holiday 1st January 2015 and the following weekend and also so that the work process is not interrupted. 31th December is going to be worked off on 13th December and 2nd January – on 24th January.

24th, 25th and 26th December are official public holidays and this years they are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday which obviously means that the weekend is coming right after them so the only working days available for anything urgent that might come up to be done (and is related to any government institution) are going to be 29th and 30th December. Private businesses are independent and decide on their own if they are going to operate or not.

Frescoes in the Preobrazhenski Monastery are to be restored for the first time in more than 99 years

The Ministry of culture allocated almost 20 000 euro for the restoration of the wall paintings in the renowned Preobrazhenski Monastery. The frescoes take up 14 sqm and are to be restored for the first time since 1915. They were painted by Zahari Zograf between 1849 and 1851; the artist is considered the most famous Bulgarian painter of the Bulgarian National Revival period and is widely known for his icons and church mural paintings. The monastery was founded in the 14 century but it was completely destroyed during the Ottoman rule. In 1832 the Turkish Sultan gave his permission for a new church to be built in the place of the old monastery. Kolyo Ficheto (the most notable master builder of that time) completed the church in 1834. Continue Reading

Luxury property market in Veliko Tarnovo is on the rise

There is a stir on the high end property market in Veliko Tarnovo. Currently there is an increased interest for real estates located in the Old Part, the central area and the outskirts of the town. More than 35 luxury houses with prices starting at 150,000 euro are on the market at the moment. A mansion with total living area of 447 sqm and asking price of 250,000 euro in Arbanassi is one of the top priced propertis at the moment. A 3-story building part of the Samovodskata Charshia architecture complex next to the Emiliyan Stanev Museum is also for sale at 176,200 euro. 220,000 euro is the price for another delightfull property at the beginnig of Varusha quarter.

The center, the Old Part, and Kartala and Asenov quarters are apparantly the most sought after. According to real estate agents there is a distinctive interest in those locations. One of the listings on the market is for two properties on top of Varusha for 150,000 each; although it hard to reach the views that are revealed from there are stunning and probably the best in town. Close to the Town Library is another 350 sqm property which rises at 4 stories due to the specific terrain and is being sold at 220,000 euro. For those wanting to savour the peace, tranquility and fresh air of Kartala neighbourhood will have to dig deep in their pockets. Hoses with extras such a garden and pool start from 170,000 euro.
