This Saturday (08.08) Nikyup will once again become the capital of watermelons – the Fourth Watermelon Fest will take place. The official kick-start of the fest is at 6 pm. Various singing groups and dancing ensembles will perform during the event keeping up the good spirits. There will be also carving demonstration showing interesting techniques during the transformation of a watermelon into a sculpture. The program also envisages watermelon themed asphalt drawing, watermelon eating contest, watermelon rolling, guessing the weight and colour of watermelon and a procession with watermelon lanterns. The Mayor of Nikyup, Yordanka Atanasova, said that everyone will be welcomed to try the sweetest watermelons grown in Bulgaria. 2000 plastic plates are ordered this year because last year they were 1700 and they run out of them before the festival was over. The British and Russian ex-pats living in the village have also prepared some surprises for the visitors of the fest.
The other good news for the village is that it no longer will experience have problems with the water supply since the pumping station will be equipped with a new pump of the highest class. The pump and the new equipment and electronics will be installed next week.
