Elena is preparing for the 4th edition of the Elenski But Festival. The event will take place on the 14th November. The tempting fair is usually held every last Saturday of October, but this year the date was changed because of the local elections which were conducted throughout the country.
The feast will be set at the town square – the place will come to life with many re-enactments, attractions, degustations, competitions and exhibitions. Of course there will be the contest for the largest and most delicious Elenski But. Women from Elena will also join in the celebration – they will prepare tasty dishes with the unique specialty. For the curious will have tables for tasting to sample this and other meat delicacies.
The renowned Elenski but is a dry-cured ham from which is a popular delicacy throughout the country. The meat is salted and rubbed with herbs and then left to dry in the air. It has a specific taste and can be preserved in the course of several years, owing much to the special process of making and the climatic conditions of that part of Balkan Mountains where Elena is located.
The day will start at 10.30 am with the recreation of an old tradition – pig scorching over a pit. Only men are taking part in this ritual. The Elena But Feast will be officially opened at 11.30. The dance and music programme will start right after that. The day will closed with a fireworks show at 6 pm.
