Trifon Zarezan is a Bulgarian holiday in honour of St. Trifon and wine. It is celebrated on February 14. Keep reading to see how some villages in the Veliko Tarnovo Region will celebrate the wine holiday.
On the occasion of Trifon Zarezan from February 14 to 16, the winery in the Yalovo village near Veliko Tarnovo will be open for visits and tastings. Each visitor will have the opportunity to learn about the process of wine production, to see the vineyards personally and to taste the divine drink. Admission is free. The holiday in the village of Yalovo begins on February 15, Saturday at 11.00 with a ritual for health and prosperity in honour of St. Trifon. An authentic ritual for vine pruning will follow.
The festive program will be from 11.30 am to 2.00 pm. It includes wine tasting, a place to buy drinks, barbecue and food from local producers. As well as a culinary exhibition of masterfully prepared home-made banitsa, bread and other specialities. Those wishing to experience the delicious temptations from the culinary exhibition will be able to do so for a small donation, and the proceeds raised from the culinary exhibition will be donated for the restoration of the church in the village.
During the festive program, visitors will enjoy folk dances performed by the folk dance group “Pletenitsa” and of course anyone wishing to join the dance can do so. The young musicians of the Junior Band – Veliko Tarnovo will surprise guests with new virtuoso performances. At 2.30 pm will be the professional tasting of three harvests of red wine of the Rubin variety, produced by Yalovo Winery.
The village of Tserova Koria will celebrate the holiday on February 16, Sunday at 10.30 am with ritual vine cutting. Then the holiday will continue with songs and dances. For another year, the Kilifarevo City Hall organizes the traditional Trifon Zarezan holiday. The cutting-of-vines ritual will be performed at the museum complex in the city. The meeting point is on Bulgaria Square on February 14, Friday from 10.00.
On February 14, at 10.00, the custom of cutting the vines will be recreated in Parvomaytsi, Draganovo and Strelets, where a “Wine King” will also be selected. In Krusheto and Gorski Dolen Trambesh the celebration of Trifon Zarezan will start from 11.00 am. At noon, vine-cutting and a competition for the best wine will start in Polikraishte. At the same time in Yantra village, the Spring Folklore Group will recreate the custom of cutting vines. The holiday in Dolna Oryahovitsa starts at 1.00 pm at the Hristo Kozlev Community Center, and the concert in Varbitsa starts at 1.30 pm.
