Veliko Tarnovo becomes the “Capital of letters”

“Books for Waste” Initiative in Veliko Tarnovo

Veliko Tarnovo, one of Bulgaria’s most historic cities, will become the “Capital of Letters” this year. On September 22, Veliko Tarnovo’s “Books for Waste” event (Knigi za Smet) takes place. On this day, people can trade plastic waste for books, celebrating Bulgaria’s Independence Day through sustainability and literacy. Residents and visitors can bring plastic waste to 2B Krakow Street and exchange it for a book. Each year, Veliko Tarnovo’s event sets records for participation and the amount of plastic recycled.

New electric bus trials in Veliko Tarnovo

Veliko Tarnovo has become one of the few towns in the country, which had the opportunity to test the two most advanced technologies in the field of electric public transport at the moment.

An electric bus running on batteries was already tried for some time along the street of the old capital during the summer in. Today another leading technology for eco-friendly public transport was presented in Veliko Tarnovo capacity for this eco-friendly urban transport.

The electric bus which was introduced today is manufactured by the Israeli company Chariot Motors. It is propelled by ultracapacitors technology. It needs two 150 kilowatts charging station on the first and last stop  to function and it takes about 5-6 minutes to fully charge, a time which coincides with the rest of the drivers. The cost per km is only 15 stotinki. The capacity of the eco-friendly vehicle is for 29 sitting and 61 standing passengers. With this this kind of the transport air pollution is reduced to very large extend.

After the trial period ends Veliko Tarnovo administration will have to choose the technology that most suits the needs of the town and the municipality villages; it will then apply for funding under the EU transport programmes.
