November, 14th is the World Diabetes Day – the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign with events organised in more than 100 countries. Bulgaria is also part of the campaign Veliko Tarnovo Municipality and Bulgarian Diabetes Association, on days 13 and 14 November will hold a number of diabetes awareness under the motto November – the month of diabetes.
The WDD was first marked in 1991. The date was chosen after the birthday of Frederick Banting who along with Charles Best makes the epochal discovery about the role of insulin in the treatment of diabetes.
Bulgarian Diabetes Association will mark the WWD in various Bulgarian cities for the fifth consecutive year with lots of lectures, sporting events, radio and television broadcasts and free screening for diabetes. Another key event is that they lit important buildings and monuments in blue. The blue colour and the circle have been adopted as the logo of the WDD as a symbol of life, health and the sky that unites all nations.
It was decided that the Bulgarian campaign will have its kick off in Veliko Tarnovo. On Friday (November, 13th) a team of medical professionals will perform free blood glucose testing with the aim of early detection of the potential risk of diabetes. The venue will be in front of the building of the Municipality from 12 till 5 pm. As part of the events, on Saturday (November, 14th) Tsarevets Fortress will be illuminated in blue from 7 pm onwards.
