Veliko Tarnovo marks the Orthodox Easter

IMG_7433Citizens and guests of Veliko Tarnovo are presented with the unique opportunity to celebrate Easter at Tsarevets Fortress. This is one of the most important celebrations of the year and the most significant feast in the Orthodox Church calendar.

This year it falls later than the Catholic Easter. The difference in the dates comes from the facts that Bulgaria is an Orthodox country and the Church here uses the Julian calendar, and not the Gregorian calendar, recognized worldwide as the official civil calendar.

The Bulgarian name for Easter is Velikden, which means Great Day and Bulgarians certainly put a lot of effort into making it a large family celebration. Here Easter is celebrated over four days starting on Good Friday (called Razpeti Petak in Bulgarian or Crucified Friday) until Easter Monday, which is a bank holiday. Continue Reading

Veliko Tarnovo will have a new Town Park

Veliko Tarnovo is to receive a new town park – its 15th. The park will be set up at the terrain near the Kachitsa Roundabout (just behind Billa Store). The initial project is now ready.

The project envisages that there will be walkways, green areas with decorative shrubs and trees, pet zone, sports facilities, kids playgrounds and water fountains. There will be skating and bicycle alleys and shaded seating areas. The park will also have a stage where it can host various happenings and performances. The funding is expected to come through the financial mechanisms of the European Union.

The plot of land spans over 18,000 sqm and was owned by the state until last year when the Council of Ministers granted the ownership of the place to the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo at the request of the Mayor Daniel Panov. All the other parks within the territory of the town were renovated in recent years after the Municipality secured funding from the European Union.

Star Village to be built between Gabrovo and Dryanovo

Foreign investors are to build the first settlement for astronomical observations in Bulgaria. It will be located in the Balkan Mountains, in an area between Gabrovo and Dryanovo. This is the darkest part of Bulgaria, away from the lights of towns and other human activity, which might interfere with astronomical observations.

The so-called Star Village will hosts festivals, workshops and training courses. The goal for the place is to become an educational and research center for professionals and lovers of astronomy, said the creator of the project David Hollands.

Astronomy enthusiasts will be able to combine their vacation with practical work, observations and even astrophotography.

The village will have a visitors’ center, a private observatory, conference halls and a modern residential, educational and scientific complex. The Star village should be ready in early 2017.
