Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport receives funding from the state

The Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications has secured additional 2.05 million leva for the airports in Plovdiv and Gorna Oryahovitsa. These funds will be used to pay off the debts which the state has accumulated towards both airports for the funding of activities such as ensuring the safety and security of flights and for the maintenance and development of the airports.

Meanwhile Gorna Oryahovitsa airport is awaiting its new owner. According to experts there is a bonus the concessioner is to receive – an on-ramp from the airport to the future Hemus Highway that is to pass nearby. Only the opinion of the Commission for Protection of Competition is awaited before the new owner takes possession of the airport.

Bulgaria in Miniatures Park to be set up in Veliko Tarnovo

The municipal council of Veliko Tarnovo approved the investment proposal of Ukrainian entrepreneurs for the creation of a Bulgaria in Miniatures Park. The municipality will provide a plot of land for the construction of the park.

Recently a Ukrainian business delegation met with the Mayor of Veliko Tarnovo Daniel Panov and the deputy mayors Snezhana Daneva-Ivanova and Gancho Karabadjakov. The idea for the entertainment complex was presented to them and the local councillors. The investment is expected to be approximately € 2 million.

Bulgaria in Miniatures Park will span over 60,000 sqm of land and will enable tourists to explore iconic historical and architectural masterpieces in the country without actually visiting them. It will be located in the area below the Baldwin Tower at Tsarevets Fortress. The models are to be 80, in 1:35 scale. Some of the miniatures which you will be able to see in the park are the ones of Tsarevets Fortress and the Asenevtsi Monument in Veliko Tarnovo, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the National Assembly Building in Sofia, the Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral in Varna, the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv, Baba Vida Fortress, the Bachkovo and Rila Monasteries, the Monument of Freedom at Shipka and others.

Nikyup hosts the Fifth Watermelon Fest

Nikyup will once again become the capital of watermelons – the Fifth Watermelon Fest will take place on 6^th August. Nikyup is famous for growing some of the sweetest watermelons in Bulgaria. The official kick-start of the fest is at 6 pm. Various singing groups and dancing ensembles will perform during the event keeping up the good spirits. There will be also carving demonstration showing interesting techniques for the transformation of a watermelon into a sculpture. A number of competitions will also take place – watermelon eating, watermelon rolling and watermelon weight guessing contests. A procession with watermelon lanterns will also take place. 5 tonnes of watermelons are expected to be eaten during the fest.

The average Bulgarian consumes 73.5 litre of beer per year

Bulgarians consume an average of 73.5 litre of beer per capita each year. The data put us even in front of beer lovers in UK, but of course behind Czechs and Germans renowned for their love for the amber brew. Both Veliko Tarnovo based breweries, Bolyarka and Britos, have invested greatly in their business over the last years. They are both members of the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria which this year marks its 25^th anniversary. Another anniversary to be marked this year is 135 years of brewing industry in Bulgaria. Brewers in Bulgaria marked an increase of 4% in beer sales across the country.

Ksilifor, near Veliko Tarnovo, springs to life with magical sculptures

Students from Veliko Tarnovo University and the National Academy of Arts have turned the park at Ksilifor near Veliko Tarnovo in a magical forest. Dozens of sculptures made of wood, stone and metal now adorn and enliven the area. Ksilifor is located just 3 km away from VT and is a favourite place for day outs, hiking, sports and entertainment. Some of the enchanting items you will find there are a fabulous library, a tree with a golden apple, a magic carpet, a swing in the form of a dragon, Baba Yaga’s House (Baba Yaga is a witch who flies around in a mortar or on a broom and wields a pestle, and dwells deep in the forest in a hut usually described as standing on chicken legs (or sometimes a single chicken leg) and Flintstone’s car. A flock of ducks keep them company and a few turtles calmly swim in the small lake in the park and occasionally go out ashore.

Besides the sculptures of characters from fairy tales, the young people participating in the event have also created and set up benches, tables, chairs and other park furniture. The Park Sculpture and Functionality Student Workshop was first held in 2011.
