Veliko Tarnovo is the heart of Bulgaria’s Independence Day celebrations on September 22.
The city will proudly mark the 116th anniversary of this historic event with a rich program of entertainment in Veliko Tarnovo. The festivities peak on September 21 and 22 but continue until September 27. A highlight of the celebration is the “Night of the Samovodskа Charshiya and Crafts Festival,” running from September 18 to 23. This festival transforms the iconic craft street into a lively arena. Offering over 30 events and more than 80 artisans showcasing traditional techniques.
A Week of Crafts, Music, and Family Fun
The entertainment in Veliko Tarnovo includes creative workshops, concerts, and children’s theater. Families can enjoy unique experiences like soap making, textile painting, and artisan baked goods. On September 19, the city will host the exhibition “Bulgaria and China: 75 Years of Diplomatic and Cultural Relations.” One of the standout events is the 17th International Festival of Military Brass Bands. Opening with a musical parade on September 21. The day wraps up with a stunning 3D-mapping performance, “Tsarevgrad Tarnov,” combining lights, lasers, and music.
September 22: Independence Day Highlights
The festivities on September 22 begin early, with a Mass at the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs at 7:30 a.m. A reenactment of the Declaration of Independence, complete with Ferdinand’s manifesto, takes place at the Tsarevets fortress. Events continue with a military ritual and flag-raising ceremony. At 12:30 p.m., military bands perform in front of the Central Post Office, followed by a concert featuring local performers. In the evening, the “Tsarevgrad Tarnov – Sound and Light” show will light up Tsar Asen I Square. Ending with spectacular fireworks.
