The street s in the Old Part of Veliko Tarnovo are to receive a new look. This is one of the largest reconstruction projects ever to be accomplished in the town. Next year the Municipality will put 15 million leva for a complete makeover of the streets in the Old Part of Veliko Tarnovo. The money comes from Regions for Growth Programme which has already funded the reconstruction of several significant sites in Veliko Tarnovo. The reconstruction project was officially presented at the end of last week and is part of the investment program of the Municipality for the coming year. Some of the streets in the Old Town have not been repaired since the Ottoman Empire reigned the country, virtually from their construction.
The Old Town of Veliko Tarnovo is beautiful and very appealing to tourist from near and far; it bears the character of the town and as such is sure to gather attention. However the last 30 years saw it neglected and void of investments. The plan is to gradually repair all streets, including the smaller ones starting from the Central Post Office and those in old neighbourhoods of Varusha and Asenov.
Cobblestoned streets will be preserved – the stone paving will be rearranged and upgraded if necessary. New asphalt will be laid on the other streets. Other issues that will be addressed are the drainage and parking problems. New recreation areas and green space will also be set up. The street lighting will also be replaced and improved.
The project for the construction of Hemus Highway lot passing by Veliko Tarnovo was yesterday submitted for assessment and coordination in the Municipality by the design company that prepared it. Officially Hemus Motorway will run north of Polikraishte, about 13-14 km from the old capital. There will also be a large road junction where Hemus intersects the planned expressway between Ruse and Veliko Tarnovo. The Ruse – Veliko Tarnovo Expressway is to cross the current Sofia – Varna main arterial road near the village of Momin Sbor.
Also yesterday the government in resignation of Boyko Borisov decided to advance the allocation of nearly 23 million leva for the continued construction of Hemus Highway. It was once again stated that the completion of motorway is one of the main priorities of the Cabinet and is a key factor for the development of Northern Bulgaria.

A public discussion concerning the route of Hemus Highway took place last Friday in Veliko Tarnovo. The director of the Strategic Infrastructure Projects National Company Asen Antov and the Mayor of Veliko Tarnovo Municipality, Daniel Panov, attended the meeting.
Initial plans for the Hemus Highway to pass 30 km away from Veliko Tarnovo have been abandoned and it is now official that the motorway will be built just 15 km away from Veliko Tarnovo. It will connect Varna with the capital Sofia and will run near the village of Polikraishte, north of V.T. A major junction will also be constructed; Hemus Highway will intersect there with the future Ruse – Veliko Tarnovo Motorway (for which I am going to tell you more in the next couple of days).
According to the Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova the change of the route is economically well-grounded – tourist flow, transit traffic to and from Europe through the Danube Bridge, as well as the airport in Gorna Oryahovitsa are the factors that tipped the balance in favour of the new route.

The ‘Improved Blue Version’ is the chosen route.

The main advantage of the newly chosen route is that it is going to pass along as many towns and villages as possible. The highway is to connect the capital of Bulgaria to the Black sea town of Varna. The completion of the motorway is expected to improve the economic state of three Bulgarian regions – the North-Western, the Northern Central and the North-Eastern. Up to 2,9 million people will have immediate use of the main arterial road.
Four alternative routes have been thoroughly reviewed. After the analysis two of the possibilities received even further examination. These are the ‘Improved Blue Version’ that passes at an equal distance by Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo and Lovech and the ‘Green Version’ that goes along the currently existing I-4 main road. The ‘Improved Blue Version’, which is the chosen one, is considered to be the best option even from an ecological point of view. Some of the villages in Veliko Tarnovo region that will be relatively close to the highway, when finished, are Varbovka, Butovo, Rositsa, Mihaltsi, Stambolovo, Vodoley, Resen, Nikyup, Paskalevets, Polski Senovets, Kutsina, Krusheto and Draganovo and also the town of Pavlikeni.
The construction of Hemus highway is going to be divided in 8 lots and will be completed in three stages. The end of March is the deadline for a construction firm, which will have to work out a plan for the execution of the first stage, to be picked out. The aim is for construction works to start in 2016 but it is still not clear where the funding for the project will come from.
