Tsarevets Fortress lights up in blue

diabetes_dayNovember, 14th is the World Diabetes Day – the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign with events organised in more than 100 countries. Bulgaria is also part of the campaign Veliko Tarnovo Municipality and Bulgarian Diabetes Association, on days 13 and 14 November will hold a number of diabetes awareness under the motto November – the month of diabetes.

The WDD was first marked in 1991. The date was chosen after the birthday of Frederick Banting who along with Charles Best makes the epochal discovery about the role of insulin in the treatment of diabetes.

Bulgarian Diabetes Association will mark the WWD in various Bulgarian cities for the fifth consecutive year with lots of lectures, sporting events, radio and television broadcasts and free screening for diabetes. Another key event is that they lit important buildings and monuments in blue. The blue colour and the circle have been adopted as the logo of the WDD as a symbol of life, health and the sky that unites all nations.

It was decided that the Bulgarian campaign will have its kick off in Veliko Tarnovo. On Friday (November, 13th) a team of medical professionals will perform free blood glucose testing with the aim of early detection of the potential risk of diabetes. The venue will be in front of the building of the Municipality from 12 till 5 pm. As part of the events, on Saturday (November, 14th) Tsarevets Fortress will be illuminated in blue from 7 pm onwards.

Elena hosts the 4th Elenski But Feast

sushen-but-svinskiElena is preparing for the 4th edition of the Elenski But Festival. The event will take place on the 14th November. The tempting fair is usually held every last Saturday of October, but this year the date was changed because of the local elections which were conducted throughout the country.

The feast will be set at the town square – the place will come to life with many re-enactments, attractions, degustations, competitions and exhibitions. Of course there will be the contest for the largest and most delicious Elenski But. Women from Elena will also join in the celebration – they will prepare tasty dishes with the unique specialty. For the curious will have tables for tasting to sample this and other meat delicacies.

s10003973The renowned Elenski but is a dry-cured ham from which is a popular delicacy throughout the country. The meat is salted and rubbed with herbs and then left to dry in the air. It has a specific taste and can be preserved in the course of several years, owing much to the special process of making and the climatic conditions of that part of Balkan Mountains where Elena is located.

but-fileThe day will start at 10.30 am with the recreation of an old tradition – pig scorching over a pit. Only men are taking part in this ritual. The Elena But Feast will be officially opened at 11.30. The dance and music programme will start right after that. The day will closed with a fireworks show at 6 pm.

The venue

A British expat has been organizing Guy Fawkes Nights in the village of Momin Sbor for some years now and this year is not going to be an exception. Wild Rovers 4X4 will be holding a Guy Fawkes Party on Thursday November, 5th. The nights bear a charitable spirit and this year funds will be raised for Velvet Hearts – a local animal rescue charity. The symbolic Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki Church opens for visits

6_12568043171_MG_3725_sThe church takes a central place in Veliko Tarnovo’s history as it was the place where the uprising of Asen and Peter was pronounced on October 26th 1185. The Uprising of Asen and Peter was a revolt of Bulgarians living in a territory held by the Byzantine Empire and was caused by a tax increase. It ended with the creation of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, ruled by the Asen dynasty. The church will welcome visitors every day from October, 22nd till November, 8th as it is becoming the focal point of the upcoming national celebrations marking the 830th anniversary of the uprising and the restoration of the Bulgarian state. The church usually stays closed during the winter months and opens doors for visitors only upon prior request.

The village of Strelets hosts the Sweet Sorghum Feast

Sweet Sorghum Treacle / madzhun

On 17th October 17 (Saturday) the village of Strelets will host the second edition of the Sweet Sorghum Feast. The festival is organized by the village mayoralty and the local community centre and pensioner club.

The organizers aim to trace back, preserve and popularize folklore traditions and customs in Gorna Oryahovitsa region and to revive the tradition of treacle (madzhun in Bulgarian) producing in the village. Sweet sorghum is any of the many varieties of the sorghum grass whose stalks have high sugar content and is used for syrup production (treacle).

There will be also a contest for the tastiest treacle; only residents of Strelets can take part in it. A jury will pronounce the best treacle and the winning contestants will receive diplomas.

There will also be a concert programme with lots of singing and dancing. Sweet Sorghum celebrations begin at 10 am in the village centre.
